Kristin Nelson
President and Senior Literary Agent

Kristin has her B.A. from the University of Missouri at Columbia and is a graduate of the nationally respected University of Denver Publishing Institute. In the early nineties, she studied creative writing with National Book Award Nominee Patricia Henley at Purdue University where she earned her M.A. This makes her particularly interested in representing fiction.

Before opening her own agency, she learned the ropes working for another literary agent. As for her previous work history, Kristin has been a college English teacher, a freelance writer, and a corporate trainer for business communication topics before embracing her true passion of agenting.

Lindsay Mergens
Marketing Director

A veteran of the publishing industry, Lindsay Mergens has held a variety of positions within marketing, advertising, and promotion since she began her career in 1990. Her early jobs included stints within the sales division of the Macmillan Publishing Company (both adult and children’s) and then with Doubleday’s advertising and promotion department. From 1996 until late 2004, Lindsay was the Advertising & Promotion Director for the marketing department of Crown Publishing Group. In 2005 she left to embark on a career as a marketing consultant where she was often hired to cover leaves-of-absence of marketing staff members or hired to provide consultation on specific projects for numerous New York City-based publishers. Anticipating that all her past experience will dovetail nicely into her new role as in-house Marketing Director, she’s thrilled to join the NLA team. She currently works from NLA's New York Office.

From sexy romance to epic fantasy, Sara has loved reading since picking up her first copy of The Hobbit. Sara has a B.A. in Women’s Studies and a B.A. in American History from Northwestern University. She lives in sunny Boulder with her always-singing husband, adorable son and two fuzzy cats.

Anita Mumm
Literary Assistant

Anita recently joined the NLA team as literary assistant. A compulsive book collector whose interests span the genres, she chose her current neighborhood based on the number of bookstores within walking distance. She received a B.A. in linguistics and French from the University of Kansas and an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois. She has taught English and creative writing to international students in the U.S., France, and China. Anita is thrilled to bring her love of language, writing, and other cultures to her new position at the Nelson Agency. She shares a cozy apartment near downtown Denver with a curvy kitty named Francine.

Chutney
Office Wonder Dog

Chutney is a 14 pound rat terrier who doesn't care much for books but loves coming to the office each day, basking in the sun, and joyously greeting the FedEx and UPS person when they come.

Paula Breen

Paula Breen has been negotiating publishing contracts for over twenty years. Her last position, before launching her own company, was as Vice President and Director of Contracts for Random House. Before that, she worked in the contracts department of both Crown Publishers and Simon & Schuster. Now, as an independent contracts manager, Paula partners with Kristin Nelson, aggressively utilizing her years of experience and savvy to help negotiate NLA contracts. She lives in Long Island.
